Residents and volunteers from the Hammersmith Community Gardens Association planted a small community orchard in a disused plot in White City last Friday.
The project – funded by the Big Local project – will include a mixture of apple and pear trees, including a new variety called ‘Core Blimey’, a new London apple that was propagated by the Urban Orchard Project.
The new orchard is set to bear fruit outside Mackay House, opposite QPR’s Loftus Road stadium.
Hammersmith Community Gardens Association (HCGA) is a local environmental charity that manages two community gardens and two food-growing projects and works extensively in local schools.
“This is just one of the small green projects we are working on across White City Estate,” said Liz Clark, HCGA project co-ordinator. “We are always looking to get more residents involved so do let us know if you have any ideas about how your neighbourhood could be improved.”
