One of the finalists in Fulham Opera’s recent showcase singing competition is in the cast of the new production of The Flying Dutchman at St John’s church.

Mezzo-soprano Mae Heydorn, a runner-up for the Verdi prize awarded by the opera company, sings the role of Mary, with Keel Watson as the Dutchman, John Milne as Daland and Janet Fischer as Senta.

Sung in German, with English surtitles, Der Fliegende Hollander is performed on six evenings (7.30pm) in the North End Road church; November 19, 20, 22, 28, 29 and December 5.

The first four performances are conducted by Fulham Opera’s artistic director Ben Woodward, with Jonathan Finney (whose orchestration this is) waving the baton for the final two nights. Daisy Evans directs.

Richard Wagner’s dramatic operatic love story, completed in 1842 and first performed in 1843, is a tragic love story set in a storm-swept Norway, where ghostly ships sail the seas alongside the real thing.
