Work is starting to restore the Ravenscourt Park Tea House in Hammersmith to its former glory.
Two centuries old and Grade ll-listed, the building will gain a new roof as well as modern, fully accessible public toilets as part of a top-to-bottom seven-month restoration and refurbishment.
Work is set to start after Monday 20 September - with the target of finishing by April next year.
The Friends of Ravenscourt Park have welcomed the restoration of the tea house. As well as a new roof in the main building, and new loos, many of the roof timbers and joists are also being replaced as well as drainage, guttering, windows and doors.
Work has been delayed because of issues drawing up contracts for such a historic site during Covid. Contractor Lengard Ltd will be working 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and - only if required - on Saturday mornings, too.
Portable toilets have been provided nearby, and the coffee shop has been relocated alongside Ravenscourt Park’s bowling area. The Glasshouse will remain open to visitors.
The council has held meetings with the park’s Friends, chaired by Annabelle May, with architects from the firm Burrell Foley Fischer attending, to talk through the detailed plans.
Residents and visitors have seven months to wait until they can again sit under the distinctive clock and enjoy cups of tea in one of the borough’s calmest, leafiest spots.
