The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and Hammersmith & Fulham Council have launched a new playwriting project for local primary schools.
Over the course of three weeks, local teachers will help pupils create characters and monologues, which will then be performed digitally by emerging actors from Young Lyric.
The project will be led by award-winning playwright and Lyric Artistic Associate, Simon Stephens, who will be working directly with pupils at local H&F primary schools including Holy Cross, Miles Coverdale, Queensmill, Wendell Park and St Mary’s.
Cllr Larry Culhane, H&F Cabinet Member for Children and Education, says: “The Lyric’s outreach to our critical workers and children in need is so inspiring. Our schools are creative hubs and this artistic offer will help fire the imagination and spread happiness in these difficult times.”
Going digital
The digital monologues written by pupils will then be shared with their families, giving them the opportunity to see their words, characters and stories come to life.
Simon says: “Hammersmith is our home and has been for the last 125 years. I’m thrilled to take our playwriting work out into schools. Primary school children have fearless imaginations. They inspire me to be more daring in my own writing. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”
The partnership between The Lyric and the council is deep rooted in years of working together collaboratively, with Rob Lehmann, Director of Young Lyric, adding: “Our work together began long before the lockdown and will continue long after it.”
