The ‘thank you’ to keyworkers banner created by teachers and pupils at St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Uxbridge Road
Messages of solidarity, virtual support – and even daily TikTok videos – are keeping the positivity high at a primary school in Shepherds Bush.
St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Uxbridge Road remains open during the Easter holidays to the children of key workers during the coronavirus outbreak.
Teachers and pupils worked together to create a banner to say ‘thank you’ to keyworkers for keeping the country going.
According to Headteacher Michael Schumm, the banner is a symbol of thanks for what the NHS and all other key workers are doing for the country. It is currently on display at the front of the school.
The school remains open – even during the Easter holidays – to support parents of keyworkers. Michael explained that staff feel ‘passionate’ that they should stay open.
“We are all in this together and it is important that we pull together at a time like this,” he added. “One student is a child of a doctor and an anaesthetist and we feel extremely proud that we can support them in doing their jobs and keeping this country running.”
Keeping up morale and positivity is paramount at St Stephen’s – Michael is even uploading daily readings to the school’s website of the Roald Dahl classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
There are also daily TikToks and Story Time – filmed by staff and students within the school – along with challenges and tasks for all the children of St Stephen’s.
Michael added: “It is important for us to keep in touch with the community – we want to keep everyone engaged. The parents are really appreciative and supportive.
“I could not have done this without the support of my teaching and support staff – they are extremely dedicated and they have all gone above and beyond the last few weeks.”
While Cllr Larry Culhane, H&F Cabinet Member for Children and Education, said: “We remain eternally grateful to our teachers and staff who are demonstrating incredible resilience and strength by working through this crisis.”
