As the eighth FIFA Women’s World Cup gets underway in France, we’re sending good luck wishes from Hammersmith & Fulham to our local heroines.

With 11 Chelsea stars playing for six countries, the Blues are the best-represented of all English clubs.

Karen Carney, Carly Telford, Fran Kirby and Millie Bright are in the Lionesses squad; Ji So-Yun plays for South Korea; Maren Mjelde, Maria Thorisdottir and new Chelsea signing Guro Reiten (formerly of LSK Kvinner) play for Norway; Erin Cuthbert plays for Scotland; Ali Riley for New Zealand; Magda Eriksson, Jonna Andersson and former Blue Hedvig Lindahl represent Sweden. Another former Chelsea star, winger Crystal Dunn, plays for the USA.

Billboard posters have appeared across the country to support England players, with Chelsea defender Millie Bright’s – in Fulham Broadway, close to Stamford Bridge – carrying a poem from her grandad, Arthur: “The training is over, the practice is done, now to get the series won. Believe in your team mates and be on the up, then come home with the World Cup.”
