Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s popular traffic-free North End Road markets have been named the best in the country.

The seasonal Fulham markets fought off stiff competition from across the nation to pick up the ‘Best Community or Parish Market’ gong at the Great British Market Awards last week.

The council has been working hard with businesses, traders and residents to improve North End Road as a thriving retail and food destination.

“This is a great achievement for our historic high street,” said Cllr Andrew Jones, H&F Cabinet Member for the Economy and the Arts.

“We are determined to make North End Road a more thriving, welcoming and sustainable high street and we’re working with local people and businesses to make this happen.”

The judging panel were impressed with the market and praised its strong emphasis on place and local people’ and being ‘an exciting example of the local council working with community groups.’

Working together

Since 2014, H&F Council has been working with businesses, traders and residents in the North End Road Action Group (NERAG) to boost North End Road and its 131-year-old market as a thriving shopping destination.

It has:

  • launched the popular traffic-free seasonal markets
  • attracted new regular traders and shoppers to the road
  • helped more businesses to move to the high street
  • reduced the number of vacant shops on street
  • made it easier and cheaper for new traders to join the market with its’ Trade for a Tenner’ scheme.
