New £400 fine as H&F cracks down on flytippers

H&F Council is set to introduce a new, heavier fine for people caught dumping their waste in the borough.

H&F Council is set to introduce a new, heavier fine for people caught dumping their waste in the borough.

Later this year the council will agree a new maximum fine of £400, double the current fine, as part of a zero tolerance crackdown on the crime.

The increased fine is a major step to helping the council in its ambition of becoming the greenest borough in Britain.

“This new level of fine shows we will not tolerate people who indiscriminately blight our borough with rubbish,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment.

“Removing unsightly flytips is an unnecessary burden on the taxpayer and hopefully this fine will help us stamp it out.

“However, to protect socially excluded residents and small businesses we will approach each incident on a case by case basis, and issue this maximum fine where there is clear evidence of abuse.”

Getting tougher on tippers

In 2018 the council announced a new £200 fixed penalty notice for flytipping, which came into force late that year.

These fines have been used alongside the council’s extensive CCTV network to catch and punish people who chose to dump their waste on our streets.

The new maximum fine comes as part of the council’s major crackdown on flytipping, to keep streets clean and pleasant for residents.

This month, local authorities were given new powers for local councils to issue £400 fines to households who pass their waste on to unlicensed carriers, which then flytip it. The aim is to ensure households avoid using rogue waste carriers.

Alternatives to dumping waste

If you’ve got large items, such as furniture or kitchen goods, you need to get rid of, there are various options available.

Firstly, if your items can be reused, there are various charities or other organisations who will take, or collect them, and give them a new life.

You can find out more information about this on ‘reduce and reuse’ pages of our website.

Alternatively, if your items need to be disposed of, you can book a ‘bulky waste collection’ from us.

For £25.65, we’ll collect up to ten items. Why not use a social network like Nextdoor to ask your neighbours if they have anything they need to get rid of, and then share the cost?
