Come and find out what happens to your recycling after your clear sack has been collected

You’ve probably wondered what happens to your waste and recycling after it’s been collected each week.

Well, now you have the chance to find out, as new dates have been added to our popular, free tours of our riverside recycling facility.

The trips, which were fully booked last year, let you see all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes as we strive to be the greenest borough in Britain.

The next available tours will take place on Wednesday 28 November from 10.30am to 12 noon, and Friday 7 December from 2pm to 3.30pm.

These dates have now passed but you can still register your interest in attending a recycling plant tour.

What will you experience?

Our riverside waste sorting facility processed more than 70,000 tonnes of waste and recycling from H&F last year.

Thousands of tonnes of waste and recycling are sorted at the plant

Being collected from your home is just the beginning of your waste and recycling’s journey. Watch in awe as thousands of tonnes of recycling arrives and is poured down huge conveyers, sorted and stacked into gigantic bales, and then sent off to be used in making new products.

You will also learn about the environmental benefits of recycling. Did you know that recycling just one drink can helps save enough energy to power a television for four hours? Or that 95 per cent less energy is used to make products from recycled materials than from raw materials?

How does it work?

A free minibus service will collect you from a local pick-up point at Hammersmith Town Hall and whisk you off for a behind-the-scenes peek around the huge plant, run by our waste disposal authority in Wandsworth.

The tour is likely to be of interest to individual residents, as well as landlords, local residents’ organisations and community groups.

To register your interest and for more information, email recycling@lbhf.gov.uk or complete the online form.
