Football fans have a rare treat next month when England women play an international against Australia at Craven Cottage.

The Lionesses, coached by Phil Neville and – alongside Scotland – already qualified for next summer’s 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, play the Matildas on Tuesday 9 October at Fulham’s riverside stadium, with tickets discounted to £1 for youngsters.

It is the only autumn women’s international taking place in the capital, and comes three days after England take on Brazil in Nottingham.

The floodlit friendly will be shown live on BT Sport 1. The last time the Lionesses faced Australia was during England’s 2015 Cyprus Cup title success, when Jodie Taylor’s hat-trick helped defeat the Matildas 3-0.

Head coach, Phil Neville, said: “After the euphoria of securing qualification to the World Cup, we can now focus on a solid nine-month preparation period, and these friendlies will form an important part of those plans.

“Australia are ranked in the top 10 in the world, and of course are potential World Cup opposition. We’re all looking forward to testing ourselves, and I’m sure our fans will come out in good numbers to show their support.”
