More new, genuinely affordable homes are coming to White City.
The new homes are part of two developments which recently received the green light from Hammersmith & Fulham Council. They include the new EdCity education hub near the White City estate and the former M&S warehouse site north of Westfield which will see additional homes being built.
“We are absolutely determined to ensure that we continue to build genuinely affordable homes in the borough,” said Cllr Andrew Jones, H&F’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration. “Local people must have the chance to stay in H&F and we are doing everything we can to ease the pressures of the housing crisis.”
All the new, genuinely affordable homes are being funded from contributions developers must pay the council as part of development schemes. Since 2017, 600 new, genuinely affordable homes have been secured.
EdCity education hub
A total of 71 affordable homes will be built as part of the new EdCity education hub located on Australia Road.
Other highlights of the scheme include: a brand new, two-form entry Ark Swift Primary Academy, an enhanced nursery and facilities for young people.
Former M&S warehouse site
Plans have been approved to build an additional 118 affordable homes at the former M&S warehouse site north of Westfield. In 2016, the go ahead was given for 298 affordable homes and now a further 118 are to be built as part of the council’s ongoing commitment to building more affordable homes.
Of these 118 new homes, a total of 60 ‘extra care’ homes will be built so that older residents can access affordable accommodation and have greater choice over where they live. Forty-five will be available at affordable rents and 15 on a shared-ownership basis.
The new homes will be designed for older single residents or couples who want to downsize to a modern one or two-bed flat with around-the-clock care and modern communal facilities. Work is set to be completed by early 2021.
More affordable homes on the way
This month, work has started to redevelop Lavender Court, a council-owned former hostel in White City and replace it with 45 new, genuinely affordable homes for local people.
And in February, work began to build 30 affordable homes by redeveloping the council-owned Fulham North Housing Office and adjacent car park.
