A world of winter wonder was unveiled in Hammersmith for the Broadway’s first-ever Christmas market last Saturday.

More than 16,000 visitors enjoyed the pedestrianised King Street and Lyric Square which was organised by Hammersmith & Fulham Council and lined with over 100 food, drink and gift stalls.

Following the successful revitalisation of North End Road with Fulham’s own traffic-free seasonal markets, the next high street to get the boost of footfall for traders was King Street.

“The Hammersmith Christmas market was a huge success and a great way to start the festive season,” said Cllr Andrew Jones, H&F Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration. “We are aiming to improve all major high streets in the borough to make H&F the greatest place to live, work and socialise in Europe.”

Christmas treat

The Jack and the Beanstalk-themed Treasure Hunt was hugely popular with the kids who ended up finding the (jelly) beans on the ice rink opposite the Town Hall.

Family-friendly street entertainment laid on lashings of Yuletide fun that included carol singing cats, naughty elves, Glitter Belles on stilts, Rudolph, Ice King and Queen, a seasonal photo booth, free Christmas wrapping and children’s workshops.

Shepherds Bush resident Peter Ballard is the founder and candlemaker of Organic Mills and could not have been happier with the Hammersmith Market.

“There has to be another one next year!” said Peter. “The market far exceeded our expectations as a trader and all the customers said they could not believe it was the first market, and there were a lot of tourists too.

“I had a lot of repeat customers from the North End Road market. A small comment from the customers which I think is a positive moan is that we had to close so early. We were trading right up to the last second and turning people away.

“The event was really well organised with drop off and pick up of goods. H&F Council’s market team done us proud again.”
