They’ve been on the march at Wendell Park primary school in Cobbold Road, Shepherds Bush.

To celebrate Arts Week, children joined forces with the Emboreet school in Tanzania to support pupils and raise awareness of the differences between UK schools and those in Africa.

“I’m so proud of the pupils at Wendell Park,” said Cllr Sue Macmillan, H&F Cabinet Member for Education. “They have formed a special bond with the children at one of the most disadvantaged schools in Africa and are proving that friendship has no barriers.”

Each class took a drawing done by a child from Emboreet and turned it into a vivid wall hanging inspired by the bright, colourful Tanzanian tingatinga style of art.

“The children have been learning new styles and trying techniques such as batik,” said Sandra Griffin from the school.

The link with Tanzania was celebrated with a parade (30 June) in the park, with a report of the day’s activities winging its way to Africa so children there could see how their art has inspired pupils 7,000 miles away.

As well as wall hangings, Wendell Park youngsters have been taught Tanzanian dances and songs by visiting artists.

The march through Wendell Park on Friday helped build an appetite for the Big Lunch at the school, which also had an African theme.
