A charity in Hammersmith & Fulham is £300 better off thanks to a cash donation from recycling residents.

Green-minded residents taking part in H&F Council’s Estates Recycling Challenge chose Hammersmith and Fulham Mind to receive the windfall, with the borough’s best individual recyclers also getting cash prizes.

The scheme, which was extended due to its success, has now finished after helping boost recycling rates across targeted estates.

“It’s an honour to have been chosen to receive these donations, thank you to everyone who voted,” said Victoria Creyton from Hammersmith and Fulham Mind.

“Your donations will enable us to keep looking after local people with mental health issues.”

The challenge launched in January 2016 before being extended for a further nine months in the summer of 2016. Through the scheme, residents of estates in H&F have taken part in waste and recycling ‘modules’ to win individual and community prizes.

“We want to be the greenest borough in the country and the success of the Estates Recycling Challenge has given a real boost to this ambition," said Councillor Wesley Harcourt, Cabinet member for Environment, Transport & Residents Services.

“We’ve found residents really engaged with scheme and were more motivated to recycle correctly. It’s great the scheme also allows members to support local charities with donations.”

Community winners

Participating estates were divided into four communities which competed to earn the most points for their recycling efforts and the top prize of £300 to donate to a local charity.

The winning community was Fulham North, where residents chose Hammersmith and Fulham Mind to receive their donation.

Individual members of the scheme have also received £650 in cash prizes for their recycling efforts over the past nine months, with one local resident being awarded the top cash prize of £250.
