In the last five weeks, the electoral registration team at Hammersmith & Fulham Council has made it possible for 11,189 extra people to have their say in the 2017 General Election.
That is the number of borough residents' names that have been added to the electoral register, since the General Election was called on 18 April.
“Our electoral services team have been incredibly busy, encouraging residents to register to vote and ensuring the register is up to date,” said Kim Dero, Interim chief executive of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, and returning officer for the count.
“But this is just one part of the council's involvement in the administration of democracy, as we will be running polling stations open all day on 8 June, as well as counting ballot papers through the night.”
Registrations closed for the poll at midnight on Monday 22 May, and everyone registered by that stage will be able to vote.
Since then – indeed throughout the last five weeks - our staff have been hard at work verifying requests to be added to the register, and updating the secure voter database.
That total comprises people who have moved into the borough, become eligible to vote once 18 years old or due to another change in status, or people who had simply not been registered before.
H&F Council is responsible for two General Election counts: those in Hammersmith, and in Chelsea & Fulham.
Additionally, there will be council by-elections on the same day in Sands End ward, and Avonmore & Brook Green.
On election day, it will be our staff running polling stations throughout the borough. And on election night, it will also be our staff counting all votes from the whole of those two constituencies.
