Local anti-Heathrow expansion campaigners gave visitors to a government consultation their view on how a third runway would harm life in Hammersmith & Fulham.

The Department for Transport’s public consultation on proposed expansion visited Hammersmith on Monday (6 March).

But local campaign group handfnothirdrunway set up outside the event to give some of the consultation’s 300 visitors a local view of what expansion could mean for the area.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has joined the local campaign group in opposing the government’s expansion plans because of the negative impact they would have on air quality, traffic and noise in the borough as well as any effects of overcrowding on public transport.

"Monday's event was successful in helping residents ask well informed questions of Department for Transport officials - most of which the officials couldn't answer,” said Christina Smyth, Chair of handfnothirdrunway.

“It also started to build awareness with residents not currently disturbed by aircraft noise, but many are still in blissful ignorance that their peace will be shattered.

To raise awareness further, handfnothirdrunway plan to run a stall at the Lyric Square before the end of the consultation period on 25 May.

The DfT consultation was part of five-week round of exhibitions being held in West London and the surrounding area.

Anyone who missed the exhibition in Hammersmith can view it in Richmond on Friday (10 March).

Have your say

It’s not too late to have your say. Residents have until 25 May to make their views known.

You can do so online here. Or, if you have problems with the DfT’s online consultation, you can download a PDF version here, to print, complete and return to them.

Opposed

“While we appreciate residents having the chance to find out more about the government’s plans, it’s imperative everyone now takes part in the consultation to make their views official,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.

“We remain strongly opposed to any expansion for concerns over the health and wellbeing of our residents and local environment.”

H&F Council is opposed to the plans because of:

  • the additional noise from extra flights and new flightpaths over H&F
  • worsening air pollution
  • the extra congestion on our roads and the Piccadilly Line.

We’re also concerned about the lack of information on these in the consultation and will be pressing the government to explain how residents’ quality of life will be protected.
