The Bush Theatre is set to wow local audiences with dozens of free tickets during the time its building is closed for renovation.

Thanks to an innovative partnership with Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Westfield London, the Uxbridge Road theatre will make 20 per cent of tickets to its new Breaking Out season available free of charge to W12 residents.

The first production will be This Place We Know, opening on 26 September, seeing six plays produced in six non-theatre spaces across Shepherds Bush. Alongside the plays, photographer Eileen Perrier will capture the faces of local residents and artists involved in the Breaking Out season.

H&F Council recently adopted a new arts strategy that aims to make the borough one of the country’s most popular destinations for people to participate in and enjoy the arts.

The strategy followed months of consultation with local arts groups – such as Bush Theatre who are one of the leading partners with the council – as it hopes to put the arts the centre of our dynamic local economy.

Embrace the neighbourhood

Bush Theatre artistic director Madani Younis hopes the ticket scheme will encourage new local visitors to embrace the theatre as their own. “We hope to embrace the neighbourhoods which surround the Bush Theatre. By taking original plays to new and unexpected environments, we can meet new people and encourage local residents to become audience members for the first time,” he said.

The free ticket offer is the latest in a series of community projects agreed between Westfield London, the Bush Theatre and H&F Council since the shopping centre opened in 2008.

“The Bush Theatre has a fantastic record of working with local residents, and this ticket scheme is a great example of that,” said Cllr Andrew Jones, H&F Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration.

“We are proud to have such a vibrant arts scene locally. We have just released an arts strategy that will see us work with residents to make it even better so residents can have greater access to high quality art for free.”
