Hammersmith & Fulham is clamping down on litterbugs who blight the borough’s streets and has fined more than 50 people in the past three months.
The tally, 56, is already more than half of the 96 fixed penalty notices issued for dropping litter for the whole of 2015-16 as H&F continues its drive towards being the greenest borough in the country.
“We will not tolerate litter bugs in Hammersmith & Fulham,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.
“Their deplorable actions blight the borough for everyone and these fines demonstrate our determination to tackle the issue head on.”
H&F enforcement officers have worked hard to target litter ‘hot spots’ and areas where residents have raised concerns.
As a result litterbugs have been successfully caught and fined in Devonport Road, Goldhawk Road, Uxbridge Road and Shepherd Bush Road in Shepherds Bush, as well as in Lakeside Road, West Kensington and Overstone Road in Hammersmith.
Culprits are issued with an £80 on-the-spot fine, which if not paid, can escalate to a maximum fine of £2,500.
“In the summer months, huge numbers of people flock to enjoy our many Green Flag parks and other green spaces,” added Cllr Harcourt.
“The sheer volumes of rubbish this creates can overload our bins, so we would ask wherever possible, that visitors take their waste home with them.”
