Free courses for the visually impaired in H&F

A series of free courses including cooking and IT is available to H&F residents

Visually impaired residents in Hammersmith & Fulham are being invited to take up free classes in cooking, art and IT.

The 16-week courses are being hosted by the charity BlindAid and are open to visually impaired or blind residents and places for the latest course are open now.

Those eligible can choose any two of the four available classes: cooking and healthy eating, IT, art, or exercise and relaxation.

The IT classes will be held in the Action Disability Kensington & Chelsea IT suite (Whitstable House Silchester Road, W10 6SB). All other classes will be held at the Latymer Christian Centre which is next door (116 Bramley Rd, W10 6SU).

More details on each course can be found below:

  • Cooking and Healthy Eating: This class starts from the very basics and develops in to more complex meals such as curries, chilli con carne, and vegetable lasagne. Meals can also be adapted to suit allergies and preferences. Attendees can use talking scales and other equipment they may not have previously had the chance to use. All the food can be taken home from the lesson.
  • IT Classes: This class is for beginners. Learn how to get on to the internet, use email and how to use basic programmes like Word with the use of NVDA – a free screenreader.
  • Exercise and Relaxation: This class aims to make the body stronger with the use of different stretching and breathing techniques.
  • Art: These classes will be for trying different forms of art and provide a chance for people to socialise and get to know one another.

Just for your awareness, all of our tutors are paid and hold current DBS checks.

Both buildings have accessible toilets.  The ADKC centre is ground floor and wheelchair accessible.

Cooking classes will be held on the ground floor of the Latymer Centre. The remaining classes will be on both ground and first floors.  There is no lift available, so availability to wheelchair users and those less mobile might be limited.

For those who would travel independently, the closest tube stations are Latimer Road and Ladbroke Grove, which are approximately five minutes’ walk away.

Bus services 7, 70, 23, 228, 52 and 452 stop outside Ladbroke Grove tube station. There is also a bus stop outside the Latymer centre for the 295 and 316 buses.
