The love of reading began early with these Fulham pupils who rushed to receive their first library cards.

It’s part of Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s drive to help youngsters love their local library by handing out membership cards to every school pupil in the borough.

Pupils from All Saints CE Primary school in Bishops Avenue, Fulham, were the first to sign up and receive their cards recently. And they dropped by Fulham Library to meet award-winning children’s author Andrew Weale to mark the occasion.

They joined in with a song and listened to Andrew’s storybook Nora: The Girl Who Ate and Ate, before receiving their cards and exploring the shelves to find books to enjoy at home.

“Books open up wonderful new worlds – sparking imaginations and boosting literacy skills,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services.

“Our libraries are a treasure trove of stories which are bound to inspire young minds – all for free. We want as many children as possible to take advantage of our libraries which is why we’re giving library cards to all pupils in the borough.”
