The expanded, refurbished Lyric Theatre building in the heart of Hammersmith has been awarded the UK’s highest certificate for environmental excellence in the creative field.

The centre in Lyric Square, which in addition to its existing theatre spaces now features a dance studio, cinema, workshops, music practice rooms, offices, classrooms and a recording studio, has won the Julie’s Bicycle three-star creative industry green certificate for an unprecedented fourth year on the trot.

It is the highest level of environmental achievement attainable, with the Lyric being the first theatre building to reach the demanding standard.

In all, the Lyric now holds five annual creative industry green certificates, having managed a 35 per cent reduction in energy emissions this year, and a 49 per cent reduction in water and wastewater emissions.

Working with London-based First Mile, Lyric Hammersmith recycled or composted 96 per cent of its site waste in 2014-15.

The theatre complex’s commitment to sustainability has also been demonstrated by the recent expansion, which includes technical improvements such as LED lighting upgrades and ecological innovations such as a green sedum roof.
