Lorry, van and bus drivers who use roads in Hammersmith & Fulham are being offered a free road safety accreditation to help protect vulnerable road users.

The one-day Safer Urban Driving course has been Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) certified and will help lorry, van and bus drivers navigate our roads more safely.

The course (seven hours) is available to all professional LGV and bus drivers who drive in H&F, as well as all van drivers who are required to undertake this training.

Drivers will learn how to negotiate roads taking particular consideration to cyclists and pedestrians.

“We are determined to reduce casualties on our roads and make them safer for all who use them, so this course is an excellent way of ensuring those who drive larger vehicles are fully trained in road safety and all of our contracted drivers have taken it,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.

“Cyclists can also play their part, which was why we held a series of ‘exchanging places’ events last month to allow cyclists to see life from a lorry driver’s point of view too.”

The day consists of a theory module in the classroom and a practical module out on bikes, led by an experienced urban cycle instructor.

This is the first accredited course in the UK to include practical on-road cycle training for drivers and will count for 7 of the 35 hours Driver CPC that all professional lorry and bus drivers need to complete every five years.

Drivers can check here how many of their essential 35 CPC hours they have completed.

The course is available on the following dates:

October: 6, 9, 11, 15, 16, 20, 31
November: 14, 17
December: 10, 12
January 2016: 5, 13, 21, 23
February 2016: 9, 17, 25, 27
March 2016: 8, 16, 19, 24

Further dates for 2016 are yet to be confirmed. The course will take place at our depot in Fulham from 8am to 4pm including lunch. Full details will be given at time of booking.

Courses are open to all LGV and bus drivers working in London, and van drivers working under contracts where this training is mandatory.

The course is also available to drivers who use roads in our neighbouring boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster.

To book, phone 020 8753 3344, or email stp@lbhf.gov.uk if you need further details.

An £8.75 document upload fee is payable on booking, not applicable to van drivers. Drivers who don’t turn up after booking a place will be charged £50.
