Let's be clear

Women in H&F are being urged to see a doctor in an effort to fight breast cancer in over-70s.

The Be Clear on Cancer campaign from Cancer Research UK launches on Monday 13 July and is focused on ensuring elderly women remain vigilant about checking for any possible symptoms.

Each year, 101 women of all ages are diagnosed with breast cancer in H&F and 43 per cent of these are women aged 75 and over.

“It is important that older women don’t assume they are past getting cancer due to their age. Cancer doesn’t discriminate by age so it is imperative that residents who find any unusual symptoms contact their doctor right away,” said Cllr Vivienne Lukey, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care.

“Early detection is key, as it makes it more treatable so we really want to get this message across to our residents, that even if it turns out to be nothing, it is better to go and get peace of mind.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in England. Rates for women in H&F are in line with the national average, with one in three women who are diagnosed being over 70 years old. Breast cancer claims around 19 lives in H&F annually.

Finding cancer early could save your life. Residents who find anything unusual think they may have symptoms should see their GP without delay.

Possible signs of breast cancer include:

  • a lump or thickening in your breast or armpit
  • changes to the skin of your breast
  • changes in the shape or size of your breast
  • nipple changes
  • nipple discharge
  • pain in your breast
  • any other unusual or persistent changes to your breasts.

If you have any of the above symptoms, your doctor will want to see you.
