National Accessibility Scheme

A National Accessible Scheme (NAS) rating can help tourism accommodation providers fulfil their responsibilities under the DDA. The rating cannot guarantee legal compliance, but will clearly demonstrate an adoption of the spirit of the Act.

The UK National Accessible Scheme, managed by VisitBritain, provides information about participating visitor accommodation for people with disabilities. The Scheme's independent ratings system shows at a glance the level of service and facilities would-be holidaymakers with disabilities can expect when booking somewhere to stay in the UK, enabling them to make an informed choice. There are four levels of mobility rating and two ratings each for visual and hearing impairment. As a disabled visitor has commented, "the NAS rating takes the worry out of booking unsuitable accommodation, it makes holiday taking more enjoyable".

Accommodation providers can use the NAS rating as a marketing tool to promote their accommodation to the growing market for accessible accommodation.

The benefits of a NAS rating - A NAS rating, advertised and explained in your visitor information, will clearly indicate the degree of accessibility a disabled visitor can expect. This will reduce the potential for visitor disappointment and complaint that may arise if you describe your accommodation in a manner that could be misleading, e.g. 'Wheelchair accessible', 'accessible' and 'disabled friendly' (we would hope all accommodation is friendly and welcoming to all its visitors). Additionally, gaining a NAS rating will help you fulfil your obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

As one disabled visitor has commented, "the NAS rating takes the worry out of booking unsuitable accommodation, it makes holiday taking more enjoyable". The NAS recognisable logo makes it easier to identify suitable properties in a brochure or website and the independent assessment carried out by trained assessors ensures a consistent quality assured rating. "I always look for NAS rated properties first, but there is still not enough choice" commented a disabled holiday taker.
