About Us
Chairman and Executive Committee

Andrew Jones became Chairman of the Hammersmith & Fulham Local Agenda 21 Forum in 2007. The Forum’s officers include David Wardrop, Hon. Secretary and Louanne Tranchell, Hon Treasurer. They and the Executive Committee are all part-time volunteers and are personally committed to the aims of LA21, bringing their own insights and expertise to the Forum. Andrew Jones is a Reader in Human Geography at Birkbeck, University of London and has served as a Borough councillor. Other members of the Committee have particular expertise in areas such as Fair Trade, education, cycling, and community development. Several Borough officers regularly attend our meetings, helping to ensure good lines of communication between community and Administration. However, representation and enthusiasm, more than expertise are the qualities of greatest value to our community forum.

In recent years, there has been an encouraging growth in enthusiasm for improving quality of life by local environmental changes. Financial support for the Forum's activities comes largely from an annual grant from the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham with additional funds from grants awarded in open competition. In recent years the group has generally worked well with the Council while remaining independent. In 2000, a joint venture with the Council and other local groups produced a successful, high profile environment day called "Your Borough, Your Future" which attracted over 200 participants and helped breathe new life into Local Agenda 21 activity in the Borough. Several spin-offs of this event have included a Grants Scheme (administered by the Council) to support local efforts to improve the environment, a publicity video, and this website. The Forum participates in the Children's Parliament for the Environment, and the Forum is invited to speak to local community groups about Local Agenda 21 issues as well as contributing articles on sustainability issues to the local press. Special interest groups set up by the Forum have been developing practical ideas focused on Air Quality, Biodiversity, Recycling, and issues relating to the local stretch of the River Thames as part of the Sustainable Thames Alliance. The Forum was the community lead in developing the Borough's Biodiversity Strategy and is intimately involved in sustainability aspects of the new Local Development Framework together with Friends of the Earth. Recently, Network Rail have agreed to our developing into a small local nature reserve, land alongside West Brompton Station. Our plans include an "ethical business forum" to encourage local businesses to adopt sustainable practices and the further development of our local "green map" plotting areas of interest.
