LEIGHTON, LORD LEIGHTON OF STRETTON, P.R.A.

Leighton
was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, and studied painting on
the continent in Germany, France and Italy. He came to prominence
in England when Cimabue's Madonna was exhibited at the RA
in 1855. From then on he had a lucrative and successful career
becoming President of the RA (1878-96) and raised to the peerage
on the day before his death. His elaborate and splendid London
home in Holland Park Road is now Leighton House Museum.
