Paying your council tax

Reduce costs for everyone

We pay transaction fees and charges for receiving your payments. If these costs of collection can be reduced, this will help keep council tax levels down. Listed below are the ways to pay in order of the cost to the council – with the least expensive first. You can help us by choosing the least expensive option that suits you.

Please pay by direct debit if you can.

Many banks and building societies offer monthly cash backs if you pay your bills by direct debit. Visit your bank's website to find out more.

Direct debit (bank or building society accounts)

Over 60 per cent of council tax accounts are paid by direct debit each year. The direct debit guarantee makes this the easiest and safest payment option.

If you pay by direct debit you:

  • can choose to pay in 12 instalments
  • have the choice of 5 payment dates - the 1st, 8th, 15th, 21st or 28th of the month.

Set up a direct debit

You can change the date of your direct debit or bank details at any time using this form.

If you prefer, you can set up your direct debit over the phone or by email.

Call us on 020 8753 6681 or email us at counciltax@lbhf.gov.uk

You will need to provide your council tax account number and bank details.

Direct debit guarantee

This guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay direct debits.

If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your direct debit the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (Hammersmith & Fulham) will notify you ten working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request Hammersmith & Fulham to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request.

If an error is made in the payment of your direct debit by Hammersmith & Fulham or your bank or building society you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society

  • If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when Hammersmith & Fulham asks you to.

You can cancel a direct debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify us.
