School crossing patrols

The Road Safety Section of Hammersmith & Fulham Council manages and maintains School Crossing Patrols at the following schools:

  • Paddenswick Road – opposite John Betts Primary School
  • Munster Road – at the junction with New King's Road
  • Dalling Road – at the junction with Glenthorne Road
  • Lillie Road – at the junction with Moylan Road.

They are either directly outside schools or where numbers of children cross the road on their way to and from school.

Consider pedestrians

The school crossing patrol service assists any pedestrians who want help to cross the road safely at a designated school crossing patrol site, not just school children or those accompanying a school child; for example, a parent returning home with a child who is below school age, after leaving an older child at school, or elderly or mobility impaired persons. They operate during morning arrival and afternoon pupil departure times, generally, 8.15 – 9.15 am and 3.00 – 4.00 pm. Motorists and cyclists are urged to anticipate when the School Crossing Patrol is about to enter the carriageway to stop traffic. Children may be over-eager to cross and could dash out in front of you.

The law

The law requires all drivers and cyclists to stop when ordered to do so by a school crossing patrol (or 'lollipop lady/man') with a stop sign.

It is dangerous for other road users and illegal if motorists or cyclists do not stop when required by a School Crossing Patrol. The law says that they can help anyone cross the road, not just children but also adults.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council are working with the Police to prosecute motorists and cyclists who do not stop for our School Crossing Patrols.  The penalty for motorists for non-compliance is a £1,000 fine and three penalty points. Motorists may also be disqualified from driving. Cyclists can be fined £1,000.

Remember: School Crossing Patrols provide an important safety function for children and other pedestrians.
