Transport issues in Hammersmith & Fulham.

Do you really need to use your car? The council promotes the use of public transport, cycling and walking - not only does this help improve air quality, but can save you money and improve your health too!

Why not follow these simple transport tips to see how you can 'do your bit'.

Useful transport tips:-

Why not set a weekly target for the number of times you go to work or a leisure or social activity by bus, train, walking or cycling, instead of using your car? Many journeys could be walked or cycled by most people.

Try to use public transport whenever you can - it can be cheaper and quicker than driving. petrol and parking fees soon add up. Buy a travelcard or season ticket which offer savings and flexibility.

Get on your bike! Bicycles are cheaper to buy and maintain than cars, and free to use and park. Most bicycles sold today have 18-21 gears, making them easy to ride and battery power assisted bicycles are also available. Or try an electric or ordinary micro-scooter!

Encourage your children or grandchildren to walk or cycle, where safe to do so, to school, friends/shops/sporting activities. This would be healthier than being driven, both for them and the enviroment.

Try to cut down the number of car journeys you make in a week. Plan combined trips, such as work/shopping and consider whether your journey is really necessary. You may save time and money!

Could the company you work for buy some pool bicycles for work journeys? (We have done so already). Why not make a suggestion? Other possibilities include to:

  • Offer a public transport season ticket, not a company car.
  • Provide zero and low emission pool vehicles for work journeys.

Could you manage withour your car, most of the time? Find out about car sharing clubs - they are becoming common. For a small annual charge (plus petrol) you can share the use of a car pool, using a booking system.

Car Clubs (formerly Community Car Share network) is the national body representing car clubs. www.carclubs.org.uk

If you must drive, could you share the journey? It may mean a small detour to pick up a friend or colleague, but it will result in half (or less than half) the number of cars on the road at this time. The overall cost of the journey, both to the environment and to your combined pockets, is less.

Consider buying a motor scooter, moped, or small motorcycle, instead of a car or second car. These are cheaper than cars to buy and run, they reduce traffic congestion and generally produce fewer emissions than cars. Or buy a bicycle or electric scooter.

Find out the environmental implications when ordering a new car or buying a used car. If you do need a car, buy as small and economical a car as possible. Consider a gas or electric powered vehicle. The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) Car Buyers Guide awards cars a star rating according to their environmental impact. The guide is available from the ETA, approx. £5 - tel. 01932 828882. A short summary can be found on their web site www.eta.co.uk/news/car-buyers-guide.asp.

Think before jumping into your car. It may not be the only way of getting there after all...
