Fly-tipping on private land

How we deal with rubbish that is dumped on private land

Fly-tipping on private land such as the front or rear garden of a house or on land that is attached to a property is the responsibility of the owner/occupier and must be removed by them.

If you think the rubbish constitutes a health hazard, Environmental Health Officers may be able to help. The owner of the land may be served with a formal notice requiring them to remove refuse within 21 days. If they do not comply, the council will remove the refuse and the owner will be charged. To report land that you feel is causing a health hazard for investigation by an environmental Health Officer, please call our Environment Helpline on 020 8753 1081.
