Waste on private land

How we deal with rubbish that is dumped on private land

Fly-tipping or dumped waste/rubbish on private land, for example the front or rear garden of a house or the backyard of a shop, blights the local neighbourhood, attracts vermin, and encourages further accumulation. Although it is often not the fault of the owner/occupier of the land the responsibility for clearance lies with them.

To report an incident please email: phs@lbhf.gov.uk or call 020 8753 1221. An officer will investigate and take the appropriate action (if through enforcement this can take a number of weeks owing to the legal process).

Japanese Knotweed

Managing Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is the responsibility of the owner/occupier of the site. While there is no statutory requirement to control/eradicate this invasive, nor is it necessary to report its presence (it is not listed in the Weeds Act 1959), it is prudent to take action to control its spread quickly.
