The council’s guide to designing and maintaining streets

StreetSmart — Volume One  can be purchased for £20 (inc. VAT), please telephone 020 8753 1081 or email environment@lbhf.gov.uk to order a copy.

Launched in December 2005, StreetSmart serves as a manual for people working in the borough and sets out our commitment to raising the quality of design. It aims to improve the public’s perception of the borough by creating streets that are both safe and attractive.

As a Beacon Council for street and highway works, Hammersmith & Fulham Council already enjoys a reputation for keeping its streets in good repair. The new guide builds on this reputation by encouraging the coordination of work across different disciplines to get the best outcomes.

StreetSmart draws together the areas of design, engineering and planning. As well as being adopted across Hammersmith & Fulham Council, the guide is intended to inspire other professionals and practitioners in the field, including other councils and local authorities, to share our vision.

The 76-page first volume describes our approach to streetscape design. It explains how we will make sure that street design respects and enhances local character. It also lists streetscape components and describes how we intend to use and maintain them in the future.

Volume Two, to be published in September 2006, is a technical manual for practitioners, which lists methods and materials to be used to carry out works on the highway.
