Enquiries on removal or licensing of tables and chairs on the public highway
The Highways & Engineering Team are responsible for dealing with all enquiries relating to ‘tables and chair(s) on the public highway.
- Removal / obstruction / licencing
- Where items are obstructing the public highway an inspection is carried out if appropriate and a warning letter issued to the premises. The letter will request that the owners rectify the problem.
- If the problem becomes a repetative issue the owners licence can be revoked or renewal at the end of year be withheld.
Applying for a licence
- Before a licence application for tables and chairs can be considered planning consent must have been obtained.
- The Highways Team will liaise with Planning and establish licence approval.
- The cost of a licence is £265.
Fees for tables and chairs are dependant on the location:
- Pedestrian squares - £300 per table (annual licence)
- Major routes and town centres - £500 for up to 16 covers (annual licence)
- Other routes - £300 for up to 16 covers (annual licence).
Complaints:
- Issues often reported include insufficient space left to pass, poorly maintained equipment and rubbish.
- These are all dealt with as part of the licensing function in Highways & Engineering (Traffic team - Licencing & Enforcement).
- Complaints should be emailed to them via Frontline email option.
