Measuring the demand for parking

We use the term ‘parking stress’ to describe the availability of parking spaces in an area. It is measured by carrying out traffic surveys, usually at night-time when demand for spaces is higher. We carry out the surveys over several days, so that they include the effects of regular special events such as football matches. Each area is surveyed yearly to see if there is extra demand for parking spaces.
