Parking tickets

If you are not parked legally, you may be issued with a parking ticket or penalty charge notice (PCN). Your vehicle could also be towed away to the car pound.

You have the right to make representations against enforcement action, and the process is slightly different according to how your vehicle has been dealt with. The council's powers of enforcement originate from the Road Traffic Act of 1991, which decriminalised parking offences and transferred the responsibility for enforcement from the Police to local authorities.

How much?

From 1st July, 2007 two rates of penalty charge rates apply. The rate will depend on the seriousness of the parking contravention:

For "less serious" contraventions:
The full charge is £80.*
The discounted penalty charge is £40:
this applies if payment is received within 14 days of the date of issue of the PCN.

For "more serious" contraventions:
The full charge is £120.*
The discounted penalty charge is £60:
this applies if payment is received within 14 days of the date of issue of the PCN.
