Hot topic: sorting office closures

Hammersmith & Fulham Council is calling for an explanation from Royal Mail about plans to move two delivery offices out of the borough.

The council has learnt that Royal Mail is considering re-locating six of delivery offices to an existing depot in Park Royal, NW10. This would include moving the W12 delivery office in Silver Road which covers the Shepherds Bush area, and the West Kensington office in W14.

In a letter to the Royal Mail, Councillor Paul Bristow, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, asks for assurances that residents will not have to travel out of H&F to collect undelivered parcels. So far, the Post Office has remained tight-lipped about its plans.

As long as the Park Royal office is open to say 8pm 7 days a week, I do not mind the local sorting office closing (on Silver Road).

It is disgraceful - how will ordinary people get to Park Royal to pick up their mail? Are there direct bus routes from all parts of the borough?  I usually have to go to Blythe Road on a Saturday morning, as it's difficult in the week if one is working. Also, there is no alternative to going in person as the telephone is never answered.  This would be a serious reduction in service following on from the post office closures in Fulham.  Particularly as the post office in Farm Lane closed and was replaced by WH Smiths in North End Road, which is going to be closed as the site is to be redeveloped. I strongly oppose the closure of Blythe Road Sorting Office.

This is a disgrace. It would be a complete nightmare to have to travel to Park Royal.  It is not at all well served by public transport. It will not be worth being served by Royal Mail in our area if the depot closes.  This cannot be allowed to happen.

What on earth is going on, is Royal Mail on another planet entirely? The closure of these sorting offices in W14 & W12 would be disastrous for the area. Why would I want to go to Park Royal to get my post or parcels? That is why if I order anything, I get it delivered to my office in London W1.

Councillor Paul Bristow, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, Hammersmith & Fulham Council:
It is not yet clear if residents will still be able to collect their missed deliveries from offices in W12 and W14. This news comes a month after three of our post offices, two of which are in Shepherds Bush, were given the axe. Services are being cut back in areas where residents have already been hit hard, and that is why we are asking Royal Mail and Post Office officials to explain their plans. We want to know if they have examined the impact this would have on postal services across Hammersmith and Fulham, and what it would mean for our residents.  We will not accept changes that will lead to deterioration in service levels for our residents.
