I’m delighted to report that the Government - at last - appears to be listening to us on the subject of Heathrow.
Up until now ONLY residents in Fulham have been consulted on the expansion plans which, if implemented, would affect the entire borough.
That is not good enough – and following my direct intervention with Aviation Minister Jim Fitzpatrick – I have now won a pledge that the residents across Hammersmith & Fulham will be consulted.
That is the very least the Minister could do.
Now it is vital that residents take this opportunity to tell The Government exactly what they think about the proposals.
That’s why we have stepped in and organised a public meeting at Hammersmith Town Hall at 7pm on Tuesday 12 February. Please come along and have your say.
The Government’s plans to expand Heathrow, if implemented, could severely impact on this borough. It is vital that you have your say.
Also attending the meeting will be Clive Soley, Campaign Director of Future Heathrow, which is advocating expansion.
The issues which we believe the Government should be addressing and which will adversely affect borough residents are:
- The increased numbers of arrivals over Fulham, a new arrivals flight path over Hammersmith and two new departure flight paths over Shepherd's Bush.
- The increase in flights predicted by experts which will soar from less than 500,000 a year now to more than 700,000. This increase is equivalent to building a new airport at least the size of Gatwick.
- The threat of more night flights.
- The noise pollution from planes which researchers have proved dominates areas up to 13 miles away from Heathrow – which would include Hammersmith & Fulham.
- The plans for a third runway which would bring this disturbance to parts of the borough previously unaffected by aircraft noise.
- The expansion which would also put further strain on the road network and our already overcrowded Piccadilly and District Lines.
Currently the consultation process is due to close on the 27th February. As members of 2M – which is a group of local Councils affected by the proposals – we are pushing for this deadline to be extended.
Please have your say on Heathrow expansion – this is too serious an issue to ignore.
