Learning Disability Week

by Hammersmith and Fulham Press Office

People with learning disabilities danced the night away as the council lent its support to Learning Disability Week.

The club night was just one of a number of ways in which people in Hammersmith & Fulham embraced the week of activities which aimed to raise awareness of the low levels of employment for people with a learning disability.

The council has its own learning disability team which provides a high quality, culturally sensitive, locally based health and social service for adults with learning disabilities who live in the borough to help them to be part of the wider community.

The team, working with other agencies, also ran an information stall in the Kings Mall shopping centre, Hammersmith, which promoted awareness of and provided information on learning disability.

Cllr Antony Lillis, cabinet member for community and children’s services, said: “Learning Disability Week is about changing people’s attitudes. We want employees to think about why there are no people with a learning disability working with them. I am pleased that so many people visited the information stall and I hope they came away with fresh views about people with learning disabilities.”
