New contract for a cleaner greener future

Residents in Hammersmith and Fulham can expect to have their rubbish and recycling collected on the same day for the first time, thanks to a new contract with international company Serco.

The seven-year deal with the support services organisation began yesterday and signals a long-term council commitment to giving residents a cleaner and greener future in the borough.

In the coming months, residents will see improved services across the borough including 24-hour street cleansing in some areas, more mobile cleaning hit-squads and daily sweeping outside schools. The borough’s streets will be kept clean through improved extra street washing efforts.

The news that Serco has joined forces with the council comes hot on the heels of a separate agreement with grounds maintenance experts Quadron who will be keeping H&F’s parks and open spaces in top condition for the next seven years.

Councillor Nicholas Botterill, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This contract will mean higher standards and an increased coverage in the service. We are determined to meet residents’ expectations by driving up standards and getting the maximum value for the taxpayer’s pound.”

New ‘split-back’ vehicles collecting both recyclable materials and general household waste will be a common site by the New Year when the same-day collection kicks in.

Cllr Botterill added: “Obviously I would ask residents to be patient with us as we go through a slight adjustment period, but we are pleased to have Serco on board and we look forward to a cleaner, greener future with them.”
