Cycling training for the over 50s
With summer fast approaching, there’s never been a better time to get on your bike and see some of the beautiful sights Hammersmith & Fulham has to offer.
So residents are bound to be interested in signing up for ‘Agewell on Wheels’ – a scheme which aims to improve safety awareness, cycling skills and boost confidence for those returning to cycling with the emphasis being on healthy enjoyment.
‘Agewell on Wheels’ will consist of two six week courses plus a shorter four week summer course in August. The initiative is part of the council’s Agewell project, which promotes exercise and healthy living for the over 50s in the borough.
Cllr Antony Lillis, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "I hope as many people take part in this as possible. It is claimed that regular cyclists enjoy a fitness level equal to that of a person ten years younger so why not make the most of the summer and get back in the saddle."
All the courses will be based at Linford Christie Stadium on Wormwood Scrubs. Bicycles will be provided for those who currently don’t have one and if people wish to bring their own bike an expert will be on hand to carry out simple repairs.
Sessions will begin with a fitness warm up and cycling instructors will be on hand to teach basic cycling skills at the stadium. The four week course, which begins on Thursday 31 July, is ideal for those with who are recently confident on their bike. The six week course, starting on 5 June and 18 September is recommended for those with less confidence.
