Civic Trust award for Bourbon Lane development
An innovative housing scheme in Shepherds Bush has won a prestigious honour at the Civic Trust Awards 2008.
The Bourbon Lane development, owned by Octavia Housing and Care, won the Special Awards Housing Award for its provision of 45 units for social rent and 33 units for shared ownership and for rejuvenating a previously run down and contaminated brown field site.
The development was completed in July 2007, after planning permission was approved by Hammersmith & Fulham Council. The scheme is 100 per cent affordable housing and the land was part of the Section 106 affordable housing contribution attached to the Westfield White City shopping centre. The Council also entered into a Section 106 Agreement with Wesfield, which placed a legally binding agreement on the developers to spend a certain amount of money on local amenities.
Cllr Adronie Alford, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "I am delighted that Octavia has won this prestigious award. It goes to show just what can be achieved when a local authority teams up with a Registered Social Landlord and builds something that is sensitive to its environment and contributes to a good quality of life.
"This is a borough where too many people feel that the ladder of opportunity has slipped away. The Council wants to ensure that everyone has a chance to get a foothold on that ladder. The Bourbon Lane development demonstrates how well planned landscape and architectural design can create an interesting, attractive and thriving neighbourhood. I hope this development will encourage such qualities in other social housing projects."
Resident Adam Fry said: "This development is wonderful. I love my flat and feel very proud of my purchase. In addition to the flat being lovely the items provided, carpets, fringe, and cooker made settling in even better, all well worth it. A lot of thought was put into building this place and I feel honoured to have had a chance to purchase this flat."
The scheme was praised at the Civic Trust Awards for its beautiful public mews areas and private gardens and its energy efficiency.
