Phoenix High School gets an outstanding OFSTED report

‘Phoenix High School is a remarkable school; it continues to transform the life chances of both students and their families. This is a school where every child’s future really does matter.’ These are the words of Ofsted inspectors who rated the school in Shepherds Bush as ‘outstanding’ in their latest report.

The report states that achievements and standards at the school are exceptionally and consistently high. ‘Achievement at Phoenix is outstanding,’ states the report. ‘Students attain examination results in year 11 that are broadly similar to those found nationally; because of their exceptionally low starting points, this is outstanding progress.’

The school also received the highest possible mark for personal development and well-being. The report says: ‘The students’ personal development, including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding. Students enjoy being in school, feel that it is very safe and caring and would enthusiastically recommend it to others.’

Teachers at the school were commended for showing enthusiasm and planning lessons well and the school was credited for the strong emphasis is places on the care of its students.

Cllr Antony Lillis, Cabinet Member for Community and Children’s Services, said: “Only a few schools in the country are judged by Ofsted as outstanding so this really is a wonderful achievement for everyone associated with Phoenix High School. I would like to extend my congratulations to the headteacher, his staff and all the pupils of the school who have made this wonderful report possible. I look forward to the school receiving many more wonderful Ofsted reports in the years to come.”

Ofsted also heaped praise on the school’s headteacher, William Atkinson, for his sterling work. It said: ‘The school is exceptionally well led by a charismatic, indefatigable headteacher who receives excellent support and challenge from a fully committed governing body.'

Mr Atkinson said: "We are delighted with the outcome on this inspection. The conclusion reflects the considerable hard work by a number of people - the students, parents, teachers and governors over a period of time."
