A 13 year old Fulham Cross School pupil has rubbed shoulders with Lords and Ladies after winning a competition for children and young people with a visual impairment.
Maya Khishigbat is registered blind and was a winner in her age category for a competition, organised jointly between the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and the Institute of Education.
She designed a logo for a project to teach mobility and independence skills to children and young people with a visual impairment.
Her logo represented someone with a visual impairment learning to walk by themselves. As part of winning, Maya was taken on a tour of the House of Lords where she was presented with Amazon vouchers worth £50 at a special tea hosted by Lord Lowe in the Members’ Dining Room.
While attending Fulham Cross School as a full time student, Maya receives regular visits from the council’s Sensory and Language Impairment Team (SLIT).
The SLIT is a team of specialist teachers and technical resource staff who support children and young people with a hearing, visual and language impairment. They visit pupils both at home and at school. The team provides young people and their families with specialist support, training for teachers and staff as well as making adaptations for text books and curriculum.
Cllr Antony Lillis, Cabinet Member for Community and Children’s Services, said: "I would like to congratulate Maya for winning this award and hope that she had an enjoyable day out at the House of Lords. I would also like to pay tribute to SLIT for the wonderful work they do in supporting young people in this borough."
