A new bus for the borough is being introduced this Saturday (January 17).

The 228 bus will run between Central Middlesex Hospital and Maida Hill, via the White City and Shepherds Bush, and will stop at the new bus station near Westfield, providing a convenient link for shoppers.

Last year, plans for the 228 bus split the community it intends to serve down the middle, with arguments both for and against the scheme. Supporters thought the bus would be a much needed transport link, but protesters claimed that allowing the bus through the borough’s narrow roads would make their streets unsafe.

Following major opposition to the bus travelling down Steventon Road and Bryony Road, including a petition with over 500 residents’ signatures, TfL agreed to re-route the bus.

The council also carried out a consultation with residents to see what they wanted, and found that 57 per cent of those who responded supported the bus route, with the majority also preferring the alternative route of Uxbridge Road and Bloemfontein Road.

Nicholas Botterill, Deputy Leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We consulted with residents on the new route and the majority of them are in favour of it as it stands. We will not be asking TfL to review the route and are glad that they have listened to what people want – this route, using main roads, is far more appropriate than London Buses’ original plan to direct the bus along residential streets.”

“The 228 will provide another useful transport link in Hammersmith & Fulham, improving access not only for our residents but also for visitors coming into the borough.”

Single deck buses will operate on the 228, running about every 12 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes during the evenings and on Sundays.
