Rubbish and recycling collection days are changing

by Hammersmith and Fulham Press Office
15/12/2008

To make life easier, and to keep the borough’s streets cleaner, H anf F Council are collecting black rubbish sacks and orange Smart Sack recycling on the same day of the week.

Refuse lorryThe new, more convenient and efficient service started on 2 February 2009.

Street sweeping schedules are also changing so sweeping takes place on the same day as the collection day for each street.

Check your new collection day
Enter your postcode in the Where's your nearest search.

The new collection days are for street collections only. If you live in a flat with a communal rubbish and recycling service, you are not affected by these changes.

Every household receiving a sack collection service will be sent a letter in January confirming your new collection day.

Please help keep the streets clean
• Put your rubbish and recycling out at the right time (after 9pm on the day before their collection or before 6am on their collection day)
• Use heavy-duty black refuse sacks, not carrier bags that easily break and spill onto the street
• Put securely tied sacks or dustbins out for collection at the front of your garden or path.
• Store your rubbish securely between collections to prevent foxes and vermin ripping bags.

Basement properties only
Black and orange sacks for basement properties will be collected from pavement level only, unless you have a disability and have registered for special help. To get an application form email cleaner.greener@lbhf.gov.uk or phone 020 8753 1100.

Second collections
If you currently get a second refuse-only collection each week, you will continue to do so.

If your new refuse & recycling collection day is: Your extra refuse-only collection will be:
Monday Thursday
Tuesday Friday
Wednesday Saturday
Thursday Monday
Friday Tuesday

New vehicles
In the run-up to the new same-day collection service, the council has taken delivery of a new fleet of vehicles. Unlike the old-style refuse trucks, the new ones have two sections, one for black bags and one for orange sacks, so that both can be collected at the same time. The single-pass service means fewer journeys, using less fuel, which is more cost-effective and better for the environment.

Cllr Greg Smith, Cabinet Member for crime and street scene, says "May I take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your help in this matter. Such a massive changeover in collection days will inevitably cause some short-term disruption but I feel that the end result will be a much cleaner borough overall."
