Faulty mobile phone chargers seized

More than 350 potentially dangerous mobile phone chargers have been seized from shops in Hammersmith by trading standards.

The seizure came following test results showing three chargers from three separate shops had failed to meet general safety standards.

Officers from the council’s public protection & safety division initially bought the chargers from shops on King Street and Hammersmith Broadway in October as part of a joint project with other London boroughs.

The chargers were found to have faulty wiring, plugs and pins that can cause fires or electrocution. Some of the products also had no instructions or insufficient details, while others had no way of finding out who made them.

Councillor Greg Smith, cabinet member for crime and antisocial behaviour, said: “We cannot let traders get away with putting the lives of our residents at risk - in particular those of our children and teenagers.

“These chargers could have caused serious injury to people and selling dodgy and dangerous goods in our borough will not be tolerated.”

The seizure tied in with National Consumer Week, which helps safeguard customers from getting swindled and makes sure goods meet legal trading standards.
