Are you aged 14 to 16? Do you think that your culinary skills could cook up a storm? If so, then you should enter Hammersmith & Fulham’s first Young Chef of the Year competition.

The council is calling on teenagers in the borough to don their aprons and get in the mix to win an iPod and accessories worth £250. Runners-up will receive vouchers to spend at HMV.

Applicants must show that they have a high standard of food hygiene, and can create a two course meal from scratch within an hour. The dishes are judged on their nutritional quality, appearance, aroma, texture and taste, and the general ambience of the business is also taken into account.

Winners from each school will then go through to the final, which is an hour-long ‘cook-off’. It will be held on Thursday February 26 next year at the T.A.S.T.E. Restaurant at Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College.

Cabinet member for community and children’s services, Councillor Antony Lillis, said: “It is important that our youngsters learn good habits about healthy eating and cooking early on in life. The competition is set to be an exciting one and it is the perfect opportunity for the next generation of talented chefs in the borough to shine.”

Anyone wanting to take part in the competition should contact their school for an application form or email foodsafety@lbhf.gov.uk. The closing date for applications is Saturday January 31 2009. For more information visit the council website www.lbhf.gov.uk.
