A tree in the centre of Ravenscourt Park is anything but simply plane.

The mighty specimen, that has stood in the park for well over 100 years, was nominated by local resident Bobby Talalay to be one of the 20 greatest in the capital. It is one of nine plane trees to be named on the list by Trees for Cities. The competition was judged by a panel of horticultural experts and well-known personalities.

A plaque is being unveiled at the foot of the winning tree – the Regent Plane – at Regent’s Park, followed by plaques at all 19 other trees in the coming weeks.

The trees were judged on historical significance, how they relate to past events or people and where they are – usually in a landmark location. They must be of notable physical character, very large, old, or an unusual shape.
