Headteachers and chairs of governors attended a special reception in the Mayor's Parlour recently to celebrate the borough's excellent GCSE and A-Level results.

Schools throughout the borough achieved a sensational set of exam grades earlier this year and this event was held to honour that achievement. Cllr Antony Lillis, cabinet member for community and children’s services attended and congratulated all headteachers personally.

Pupils attending schools in the borough achieved a best ever set of A-Level results. The overall A-Level pass rate at grades A to E for schools in the borough was a record-busting 99.4 per cent .

The overall GCSE pass rate at five or more grades A* to C for schools in the borough was a breathtaking 77 per cent, an increase of 10 per cent on last year’s results and 13 per cent above the 2007 national average.

With English and maths taken into account, schools have achieved an impressive 59 per cent pass rate at grades A* to C, again 10 per cent above last year's national average and well above the inner-London average.

Sir William Atkinson, Headteacher at Phoenix High School attended the event. He said: "I am very proud of the magnificent results that pupils from the Borough's schools achieved and it was a real honour to be invited to the Mayor's Parlour to celebrate that success. Pupils put in so many hours in order to gain such good results and it is wonderful that their hard work was so well rewarded this year."

Cllr Lillis, said: “It was wonderful to see so many headteachers and chairs of governors in the Mayor’s Parlour and I know that they are all immensely proud of this year’s exam success. These excellent results are a testament to the hard work of headteachers and teachers as well as the pupils and their families. The schools deserve real credit for their dedication and it was only right that they were honoured in this way.”

Here’s hoping to another sensational set of exam results next year.
