King Street regeneration update

Work to revitalise the west end of King Street is gathering pace.

Since winning a competition earlier this year, the council’s development partner - Grainger/Helical Bar - have been working hard behind the scenes to prepare the essential technical work to make the King Street Regeneration project a reality.

During the summer the second in a series of update newsletters was delivered to 16,000 homes and businesses in the Hammersmith area.

Progress so far includes news that All Clear Design - a multidisciplinary architectural practice - has been appointed to review proposals for the new buildings and ensure that they are fully accessible to everyone. All Clear has already had initial discussions with local disability groups to gain their input into the proposals.

Another integral part of the regeneration proposals will be the public space in front of Hammersmith Town Hall. Grainger/Helical Bar will be holding a competition to select an architect to design the public square landscape the area. The competition will be overseen by a public square design panel, made up of expert stakeholders and development partners. The panel will help select a short-list of landscape architects to prepare schemes based upon the agreed brief.

Residents will have a chance to have their say on each of the short-listed schemes before the panel recommends a preferred architect to the council.

Councillor Mark Loveday, H&F Council Cabinet Member for Strategy, said: “Grainger/Helical Bar and the council are committed to continuing our robust and thorough consultation on the King Street proposals with the people who matter most - local residents. We have already had many meetings with local residents and affected groups in the area and these will continue in the future.”

“When we are in a position to share more detailed proposals, we intend to hold a public exhibition where residents can again give us their thoughts on the draft proposals.”

The exhibition could take place early in the New Year and, once a date and location for the exhibition has been confirmed, it will be widely advertised.
