Residents of Fulham joined the Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham and other dignitaries to celebrate the official opening of the newly-developed Frank Banfield Park last week (Thursday October 9).
The spruced-up park has undergone a massive facelift in the last nine months. It now features a brand new children's play area, attractive new landscaping, improved railings and gates and new benches.
The Hammersmith park, a popular cut-through for residents and workers, is named after a former Mayor and Alderman of the borough. Its redevelopment comes as a result of a planning agreement dating back to 2003 between the council and developer Goodman, who own, develop and manage the Waterfront and Riverside buildings at the nearby Hammersmith Embankment development.
At the special re-opening of the park, Mayor Andrew Johnson cut the official ribbon and mingled with local residents and park users. Also in attendance was Doris Banfield, widow of the late Frank Banfield.
Cllr Paul Bristow, cabinet member for residents' services, said: "I think that we all agree that the new park looks fantastic, something that all residents and park users can be proud of. This summer's ParkLife campaign has shown people just how committed we are to improving the quality of parks in Hammersmith & Fulham and the improvements at Frank Banfield Park are just another example of that commitment."
Commenting on the improvements at Frank Banfield Park, Michael Gibbens, Regional Development Director at Goodman said: "We are thrilled with the improvements here at the park. We now have a vastly enhanced space for local residents and workers to enjoy, and feel proud of. The park now offers benefits to everyone that uses the space, from the children's pay area to improved lighting and security. We hope that the community continues to enjoy Frank Banfield Park in years to come."
Doris Banfield said: "I am very pleased with the new park. It looks lovely and I am sure that Frank would be proud of it."
The Waterfront and Riverside buildings total 194,085 sq ft and are home to WRC Holdings, Opodo and Betfair among others, and make up the initial phase of the Hammersmith Embankment development.
Goodman also has planning consent for a second phase totaling 620,000 sq ft comprising offices with café, restaurant, retail and exhibition uses, together with a water sports facility.
